David the Wavid Top Contributor: Batman. Verified Purchase. So you're new to Evangelion, or even anime?
Unaure what order to watch things? While the TV series, Neon Genesis, is a classic and one of my favorite shows, it can be slow just to draw out the episodes at some points.
And it also looks very dated, especially on the "perfect" DVD set. In the time it would take to watch one episode, you'll already be hooked after finishing watching the first action scene.
When you're done, THEN watch 2. Have fun and get ready for the fourth movie! I watched Evangelion 1. All my friends who watch Anime on the regular have always told me to check out the Evangelion series with high recommends since I'm big on giant beings beating the crap out of each-other.
Holy crap this movie Is just.. I loved the mixture of traditional animation and 3D animation! The blending of the two really brought out the best In Anno's directing style and shows he's down to do something different and to do It right!
The sounds of the mechanics and the Eva Units were realistic and even while animated, the sound design really brought out the believability In both weight and maintenance, the angels though..
Angel 6 Is without a doubt one of the most beautiful yet scary as hell designs ever! The way this thing would shift to attack was breathtaking and how It's charging sounds were basically a screaming woman In a higher pitch not only stunned me but also made me question the angels and their true nature, that coming from an animated movie just shows the ferocity behind the film's team.
I watched the dubbed version of the film and I personally loved everyone's performances, everyone came off well fit to their characters and played them perfectly.
No one felt out of place or out of character and they all gave a believable show. The movie's story Is what I wasn't expecting to like as much as I did.
Normally with giant anything In the story, main character backstories are kinda here nor there.. One of the things I really loved with the film was the well balanced out drama and action, the film didn't pull a "John Carter" and each bit was just as engaging as the last!
Speaking of which, the drama In the film Is superb as Is the action. In the end It's her words that finally end the inner turmoil Inside Shinji's mind, she makes him realize this Is a one size fits all deal, everyone Is at risk.
Couldn't give enough praises for the drama! Now, the action. While the classic trope of "talking while fighting" was there, but It didn't feel like a burden and It helped that what was being talked about was Interesting!
I became Invested In almost every character, I cared about their turmoil and well being, the action sucked me In and delivered an awesome experience In and of Itself.
Can't get enough of It! I was surprised to see this movie was made In no less, so It's almost on It's way to 10 years old, but you'd never guess that watching the movie.
The movie has aged beautifully and I cannot wait to see the next two! I give Evangelion 1. Did 26 episodes of mind-stabbing anime just not do it for you?
Then this is the movie for you. Do you like drunken sexy captains of the guard who have a penguin that lives in their refrigerator with the beer?
Seriously, it's Evangelion, only The transfer from VHS was NOT good, the people doing the frame-by-frame had a bad case of the caffeine shakes and a lot of the subtitling was just dreadful.
This is a complete rebuild, so it's not only got cleaned up redrawn? All the creepy religious symbolism is preserved, it just looks cleaner.
I still prefer the original, but hey. This is still great. Note: I don't remember if the penguin is in it, I'll update this review if it turns out he isn't.
Utterly irrelevant to the plot, he's still pretty much my favorite part of EVA. Love the entire series of NGE and everything about it.
One of these is Shinji's follow pilot Rei Ayanami, a cool and collected girl who spends better part of the movie giving a ponderous stare into space more or less oblivious to those around her.
When she does react she hardly seems to understand her own feelings. Shinji asks her why she pilots an Evangelion and her answer is as simple and contemplative as the movie.
The film is the first in a planned production of four films that re-imagine the 90s series Neon Genesis Evangelion. One of the most remarkable things about this movie is how easily the episodes translate into the arch of a feature length film.
Despite that the movie is as much if not more so for viewers who have never seen the series. The movie itself refines certain points left unclear in the original show, making this version more clear and understandable for old and new viewers alike.
Though the final film in the set of four promises a completely new end to the story, old fans will find the first movie very familiar.
However old fans who pay close attention to certain scenes in this movie will learn that the film does more than retell the story and in the process may redefine two of the most overused formats ever in the history of cinema.

It may not be as deep and thought provoking as the original, but as a die hard NGE fan, I must say it's a refreshing take on an somewhat underrated cult anime icon.
As a fan of the original series I was excited to finally get into the Rebuild movie series. I was really shocked at how true the film was to the first part of the series.
There were some differences toward the end which is a part of the retelling and re-imagination. I suspect this was due to the time constraints of the film.
Other areas they went into greater detail than the series originally did. It's a great watch for newcomers and long time fans of the franchise.
The only down mark I can give is some parts of the story, such as when Toji punches Shinji, was rushed and hurried with no lead up to why he did it, seemed oddly rushed and de-emphasized as these were big moments for Shinji's growth as a pilot and person.
Otherwise, very well done and worth the watch. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Evangelion tells the story of the beginning of the Third Impact in much the same way as the original series did to begin with, but is interlaced with new twists, upgrades, subtle differences and, by the end credits, the first hints of something very different.
Shinji Ikari, a young Japanese boy, is called in by his father to pilot a top-secret, clandestine-organisation-led Mecha entity - known as an Eva Unit - in order to fight against enormous beings - known as Angels - that are trying to destroy Earth.
But under this surface layer lies a labyrinthine story of what it is to be human and, indeed, what it is to even exist at all. While I liked how this film stayed true to the original series, I also loved the additions that were implemented: most notably the stupendous portrayal of the new Ramiel.
Furthermore, the images are crystal-clear and sharp, the CGI is used to compliment rather than override the main drawings and the attention to detail - particularly the workings of Tokyo III - are superb.
Evangelion looks and feels fantastic. The new soundtrack is good too. Whether the Rebuild is better than the original series is, certainly at this point, an unanswerable question.
If you like Sci-Fi, buy it. The Rebuild is under-way. No real dislikes. Just the fact that some texts written in Japanese are not translated, for example when Shinji Ikari, the main character, watches a somewhat naughty photo, sent to him by Misato Katsuragi, wich is his leading officer in NERV,on wich she deliberately shows her oppai[they are partially covered by her clothes, though,so no real nudity],while she has written a text, with a pointing arrow to them on the photo, asking Shinji to pay kind of extra attention to them.
Funny joke wich they should at least have translated. The picture quality in most scenes is far better than their original version, since it's a digitally remastered remake.
I can surely recommend it. Report abuse. Has a few extras. This is going to be a review of the case and extra content because I assume that, if you are thinking about buying this show, you've already seen it and have decided you liked it enough to purchase the physical copy.
The case is nothing special. Holds the discs and has nice artwork, can't ask for much else. There are not much in the way of extras but it does come with a music video.
One person found this helpful. A calm opening is cut short by the army trying and failing to take down a massive creature called an angel but things are quickly evened up when the Evangelion, which is a giant robot with anger issues, is brought into the action.
It is a painful process and I think the film plays out well in showing that helpless schism between individual needs and needs that his forced responsibility require of him.
The angel fights are well animated and heart stoppingly well put together, everything around these scenes seem to be quite understated and awash in a 30 year old feeling, something in the colours or style, the music has the same kind of nostalgic feel which is actually quite nice and once you read that it is actually a reboot of an old programme you realise why.
I haven't seen the original so can't comment but I'm sure the film is full of nods to the original in a way that long term fans will love.
I have to say that this film is a difficult film to like; I actually hated it when I first watched it I just couldn't connect with it at all.
Multiple views will change this, probably for most people, and I will be getting a hold of the sequel to see how it all turns out.
If you've seen the show, its pretty much the same plot, with only slight differences like the introduction of Makinami and changng Asuka's name from Soryu to Shikinami and they're such small differences that its not insulting to the original.
As ever, the music is played perfectly, with very quiet scenes and very loud dramatic scenes, the classical use aain is spot on.
All in all, the Rebuild as it is right now is good-I just can't believe we've got two more films to come. Buy this and Evangelion 1. Need it sooner?

When another angel arrives, Shinji's classmates Toji Suzuhara and Kensuke Aida sneak out of their emergency shelter to watch the battle, but the angel throws Unit 01 onto a mountainside, nearly crushing them.
Misato has the two take cover in Unit 01's cockpit and orders Shinji to retreat, but he ignores it and destroys the angel with Unit 01's knife. After Misato scolds him for insubordination, Shinji wanders off, and is recovered by NERV agents and brought back to her.
The Sixth Angel appears, but when Shinji goes to attack it in Unit 01, the angel fires a powerful laser, critically injuring him, then begins drilling into Tokyo-3 to reach NERV headquarters.
He wakes from a coma several hours later and Rei tells him she will take his place and leaves for the mission alone. To motivate the despondent Shinji, Misato takes him to the deepest level of NERV headquarters and shows him a giant white being crucified to a cross-like restraint: the Second Angel, Lilith.
Misato explains the angels are attempting to initiate contact with Lilith and bring about the Third Impact, the prophesized end of all life on Earth.
Shinji agrees to pilot Unit 01 against the angel alongside Rei in Unit He successfully destroys it with an experimental positron sniper rifle , which requires the entire electrical power output of Japan to power.
Rei is nearly killed defending Shinji from the Angel's return fire, but he saves her by cooling Unit 00 in water and prying open its cockpit using Unit 01's knife.
Rei, normally cold and emotionless, shares a smile with him. On the surface of the Moon, Kaworu Nagisa awakens from one of nine coffin-like containers arranged on the surface.
In a pit in front of him, surrounded by construction equipment and scaffolding, is an unidentified giant, wearing a purple seven-eyed mask and wrapped in white bandages.
Looking towards Earth, Kaworu says that "the third one" has not changed at all and that he looks forward to meeting Shinji. He requests that Shinji become a pilot of an "Evangelion," a colossal android built to fight against monstrous and destructive alien creatures known as "Angels" that wreak havoc on the planet and threaten the survival of the remaining human race.
Although initially reluctant, Shinji is swayed by the idea of reconciling with his father, and agrees to aid in mankind's perilous endeavor against its alien threat, as the pilot of Evangelion Unit Thrust into the midst of a dangerous battlefield, Shinji must find the necessary courage and resolve to face against the Angels' incursions before it is too late.
